Washington, D.C.: After months of secret negotiations to reconcile the House and Senate versions of the education reauthorization to replace the failed No Child Left Behind, President Obama has signed the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), favored by the education bureaucracy but opposed by many conservatives. President Obama’s quick and willful signature on this education overhaul should only increase skepticism that this bill will meaningfully reduce federal meddling in education.

For weeks, Speaker John Boehner and other congressional leaders have been negotiating a two-year budget deal and debt-limit increase with President Obama. This monstrosity not only allows the federal government to take on new debt, but it also gives away the only clear conservative victory from the last six years – the budget caps that have curbed federal discretionary spending.

Today, Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards will testify before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. (Watch live, 10 a.m. EST.) She is being called to account after a series of videos from the Center for Medical Progress showed her organization selling the body parts of aborted babies. To draw attention away from those barbaric practices, Planned Parenthood is planning a “#PinkOut Day,” in which its activists swarm the Capitol and blanket social media.

Your calls to Congress worked! Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced yesterday that the Senate will have a cloture vote Thursday on a Continuing Resolution (CR) that funds the government through December 11th and includes H.R. 3134, passed by the House of Representatives last Friday, stopping Planned Parenthood funding for one year and redirecting funds to Federally Qualified Health Centers. These health centers not only provide more comprehensive health services, but they also outnumber Planned Parenthood clinics across the nation 20 to 1. By redirecting federal funding away from Planned Parenthood, America’s largest abortion provider, Congress is continuing to fund women’s health care through centers that give more options and more services to women.

On Tuesday, the Center for Medical Progress released its tenth video exposing Planned Parenthood’s appalling disregard for unborn babies. Planned Parenthood executives are seen mocking laws against selling aborted baby parts while acknowledging the public relations problem they would have if Americans knew what they were doing.

Earlier this week, the Center for Medical Progress released its ninth video exposing Planned Parenthood. In this video, workers in the abortion and fetal-tissue fields discuss their methods for acquiring baby parts.

Over the summer, the Center for Medical Progress released eight undercover videos that reveal the true nature of Planned Parenthood and its partners. The videos show Planned Parenthood clearly trying to wring every dollar it can out of every abortion it performs, undermining its claim to be a “non-profit women’s health organization.”

September promises to be a busy, and likely controversial, month for Congress, as the House and Senate return on September 8th. The issues mentioned in this earlier alert remain important, and with the fiscal year ending at the close of the month, there is the added pressure of funding the government. Republican leaders in the House and Senate must prove their willingness to use their majority to achieve conservative goals. Please continue to contact your senators and representative about the following:

On Monday, the Senate rejected a bill to defund Planned Parenthood. S. 1881 did not reach the 60-vote threshold required to advance the bill, but it did receive support from a majority of Senators. The last time this question came before the Senate, only 42 Senators voted yes, and 5 Republicans joined all Democrats in opposition. Last night, all Republicans except Mark Kirk of Illinois voted yes, and Democrats Joe Donnelly and Joe Manchin joined them.

Americans have been shocked in recent weeks by a series of videos showing executives of Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, discussing the sale of body parts from aborted babies. The abortionists were caught on film as they casually described altering abortion procedures to preserve lucrative organs and then haggled over prices.
