This week, the Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, proposed a tax on the miles that we drive. This brand-new tax would have disproportionately affected those who live in rural areas — in other words, an extra tax on Americans who vote Republican. The outcry against this new tax was so immediate, that Buttigieg had to discard his idea.
Then, Speaker Pelosi, who is operating with a razor-slim majority in the House, tried to investigate the Republican razor-slim win last November in Iowa 2 Congressional District. Pelosi wanted to solidify her position by seating another Democrat, but the outcry was so immediate that the Democrat candidate had to withdraw.
These victories may seem small because they did not make the news, but we should always try to stop bad ideas before they get started. Many thanks to our D.C. staff (Kirsten Hasler and Tabitha Walter) for their timely alerts on the Washington mischief.
