Gas stove

Not if you live in New York City or Berkley, California; you are definitely not cooking with gas. The New York City Council just passed a ban on gas stoves and gas-powered heat in new construction, following both Berkeley and San Jose in imposing such a ban. The members of the City Councils must not be cooks!

Every cook I know prefers to cook with an immediate flame that can be easily controlled: turning down the fire is just as important as turning up the fire. Gas stoves are immediately responsive.

So why do the grand pooh-bahs of New York and Berkeley want to come into your kitchen and dictate your choice of stove? Control. Changing your stove’s fuel will not have any effect on “climate change”. Even if every person in America threw out their gas stoves, the electric replacement would still be fueled by fossil fuels. The climate alarmists neglect to tell you that most of the power that generates electricity comes from coal.

What is the evidence that control of your personal life is the real underlying reason for New York’s vote to ban gas? The answer lies in who they choose to exempt from their draconian rule: businesses. Hospitals, commercial kitchens, manufacturing, and laundromats are all allowed to use their favorite and reliable gas power.

Fie on the bureaucrats who are trying to tell us that when we cook a steak at home, we are causing more “climate change” than a large factory. They will probably tell us to stop barbecuing — oh, wait, the movement to stop charcoal smoked foods already is pestering menu plans.

In my neighborhood, storms have caused me to lose electrical power about once a year. Sometimes the outages have lasted for days. But even without electricity, I can still cook a meal and take a hot shower. Americans are foolish to allow their elected representatives to deny them access to cheap, reliable, and efficient gas energy.
