No Religious Litmus Test
President Trump’s nominee for Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, has again proven the hypocrisy among Democrats. With religious freedom and national security as his top priorities, he is ready to take the position by storm. However, the votes to get him there may prove to be difficult.
Director Pompeo has the credentials to become Secretary of State. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point before later serving on the House Intelligence Committee in 2010. He has served in the CIA Director position for over a year and has provided high-level intelligence information to the President. He helped preserve the integrity of the sanctions on North Korea, continuously worked to target ISIS leadership, and fought against Russian aggression. In addition to his impressive resume, he has never wavered in making the Conservative agenda a top priority.
During last week’s confirmation hearing, Democrats were relentless in bashing his Conservative beliefs. Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Ed Markey (D-MA) criticized his common-sense request for Muslim organizations to condemn terrorist attacks that are carried out in the name of Islam. Sen. Booker did not only question him about his beliefs on Muslims, but also on comments that Director Pompeo’s church denouncing same-sex marriage. Sen. Booker questioned his beliefs on Muslim and commented that Director Pompeo’s church denounces same-sex marriage. Sen. Booker has already stated that he will refuse to vote for him because of Director Pompeo’s religious beliefs. This type of religious test is unconstitutional and should be condemned by both Republicans and Democrats. Senator Booker is only fueling Director Pompeo’s fire to make sure religious freedom remains a Constitutional and international right.
Other Democrats such as Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Tim Kaine (D-VA) have publicly stated that they will not vote in favor of his nomination even though they voted to confirm him as CIA Director. They say this is because of his bold stance against the LGBT agenda, his statements on American Muslims, and his pro-life beliefs. However, his beliefs on these matters have not changed from position to position. Along with Senator Jeff Flake’s (R-AZ) undecided vote, this threatens his chances of being confirmed.
Eagle Forum signed on to a coalition letter to highlight the importance of religious freedom and help push him across the finish line. We will keep you informed of his progress.
Please email or call your Senators to confirm Director Pompeo. We need him now as Secretary of State.
