A Nebraska Eagle Forum member just told me that this year the fertilizer for her farm costs $1,400 per ton. Last year, the cost was $350 per ton. She is not sure that her farm will be able to survive. No fertilizer means no food.
The climate alarmists have demonized the production of food. Sri Lanka, with a population of 22 million, is a cautionary tale. These prophets of doom recently destroyed Sri Lanka by imposing a nationwide ban on inorganic fertilizers in June 2021. Widespread crop failure ensued. It took less than six months for inflation to soar by 50 percent, economic collapse, and social rebellion. No food means no peace.
We have abundant food in America because farmers use fertilizers and pesticides. Crop failure is very rare. Yet, the essential materials for the production of food to feed humanity are attacked as bad for the environment. Abundant food requires oil and chemical fertilizers. Farms do not run on electricity and manure alone.
Abundant food means low prices and low inflation. The price of food rises when the price of oil and fertilizer increase. We should not let the climate alarmists tell farmers how to manage their farms.
