Last week, the House and Senate were expected to pass another Coronavirus supplemental. Negotiations came to a halt after Democrats blocked the deal calling “for more money for hospitals, key workers and small businesses.” No deal has yet been reached, and talk seems to still be at a standoff.
In the meantime, President Trump rescinded funding to the World Health Organization (WHO) while a Congressional review is established. The WHO’s response to COVID-19 was flawed from the start. They began by praising China’s response to COVID-19; yet it is estimated that China’s failure to provide the truth about the virus “likely caused a 20-fold increase in cases.” To add to this, the WHO did not support the President’s decision to halt travel from China, a decision that most likely helped greatly reduce the spread in the US.
While American taxpayers provide about $400-$500 million dollars annually to WHO, China only provides 1/10th of that amount, or about $40 million. The WHO should have the US’s best interests in mind.
Eagle Forum appreciates the President’s good stewardship of American taxpayer money. We encourage Congress to follow this lead in negotiations for further supplemental packages.
