The old saying, “Give the devil an inch and he will take a foot,” has proven true in recent weeks. Pro-abortion activists have legalized abortion in the third trimester in states such as New York and have even advocated for infanticide once a baby is born alive. Pro-life Congressional members have recognized the sense of urgency to protect our children and future generations.
The Senate voted on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (S. 311) which failed to get 60 votes to pass cloture, the measure that brings it to the Senate floor for a passing vote. The 53-44 vote included Democrat Senators Bob Casey (PA), Doug Jones (AL), and Joe Manchin (WV). This should not have been labeled a Republican or anti-abortion bill. This was a straight forward bill that would protect infants who are born alive after a failed attempt. Liberals have taken this issue too far. While we certainly applaud these Democrats who ignored the party line and chose to uphold life, it should be noted that Manchin and Casey also voted in January 2018 for the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (S. 2311) but Jones voted not to protect babies viable after 20 weeks from this barbaric death. Many House Republicans have asked multiple times for unanimous consent to bring the House version, H.R. 962, and will continue to do so every day they are in session. Minority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) has also announced that he will file a discharge petition to force a vote on the Born-Alive bill. Because the Democrats hold the majority, it will be hard to get the 218 signatures needed for the petition. However, Republicans are keeping life a priority this Congress and exposing those who refuse to value life.
The Trump Administration had better success this week with pro-life policy. The Department of Health and Human Services finalized the Title X rule that prohibits family planning clinics who receive federal funds to reside in the same location as an abortion facility. It also ensures conscience protections for those who choose to not refer for abortion. The rule is expected to cut $60 million from Planned Parenthood. This is one step toward defunding Planned Parenthood altogether.
Eagle Forum voiced our support for the Born-Alive bill and looks forward to Congressional members continuously driving this effort forward.
