As another shutdown looms, Congress plans to punt the budget, once again. The House passed a Continuing Resolution on Tuesday that expires March 23rd. A few long-term initiatives were attached to the CR including Medicare reform, community health center funding, and a full year authorization of Department of Defense funding. After the big stink over DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and border wall funding, there is no mention of either in this budget measure.
The Senate has different plans, though. Their plan is to add in budget caps and strip defense funding. Not only would this leave our nation’s military pay in limbo, but it would add billions of dollars to the deficit. House Conservatives and members of the Freedom Caucus have already spoken out against this measure with plans to oppose. Although a shutdown is not planned, the back-and-forth may make the passage of the CR much more difficult.
Having a fight on a CR every month consumes time that could otherwise be used for legislation that betters our nation’s families. Eagle Forum will continue to stay on top of these budget measures while urging Congress to pass a real budget.
