Recent news reports revealed that certain Congressmen have abused taxpayer money by creating personal hush funds to cover up egregious acts. These funds have been used to pay off claims of sexual harassment in their own offices. A whopping $17 million over 20 years has been used to keep victims quiet.
Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has stepped up to create legislation to eliminate these hush funds. His bill, the Congressional Accountability and Hush Fund Elimination Act (H.R. 4494), will do just that. Not only will taxpayer money be prohibited from paying these types of settlements, but it will require the perpetrators to reimburse the public with interest. Victims past and present will be able to speak out publicly against the inappropriate actions that have occurred.
More than 60 conservative leaders and organizations sent a letter to Congress in January asking for swift action on this bill, however, the bill has not moved forward. These heinous claims have been swept under the rug for far too long.
