On Saturday, April 18, 2026, President Trump issued an Executive Order under the guise of “accelerating medical treatments for serious mental illness.” Sadly, this rush to approve and even reschedule dangerous psychedelics will lead to more addiction, mental instability, and even death.
“Make America Healthy Again should not be Make America Addicted Again,” said Eagle Forum Chairman Anne Schlafly. “Did we learn nothing from the easy access to opioids? The drug profiteers made gobs of money through the easy access to addictive pain relief. Under the guise of PTSD relief, the Trump Administration is bypassing scientific review to fast-track dangerous hallucinogens. The FDA must be guided by rigorous scientific inquiry, not social media influencers and popular podcasters.”
“Just months ago, the New York Times acknowledged that ‘America has a Marijuana Problem,’” Kris Ullman, Eagle Forum President, continued. “Will magic mushrooms and other hallucinogens now be given the same treatment as marijuana? Giving dangerous drugs the veneer of legality only increases the acceptance and use by more Americans, especially children. The federal government should be warning Americans about the dangers of mind-altering drugs, not make it easier to access psychedelics with risky side effects.”
The Executive Order will allow the first-ever human trials for psychedelic drugs in the United States, rush taxpayer-funded research on these life-threatening drugs, and encourage fast-track voucher drug approval that could make these drugs available within weeks.
“Eagle Forum supports protecting all life, and this order will do the opposite. We must protect our children and vulnerable adults with evidence-based research, not industry-driven hype,” Ullman concluded.
Eagle Forum was founded by Phyllis Schlafly, a dynamic and charismatic leader who inspired countless women and men to participate in the process of self-government and public policy-making so that America will continue to be a land of individual liberty, with respect for the nuclear family, public and private virtue, and private enterprise. For nearly fifty years, Eagle Forum’s network of state organizations has led the charge to mobilize the grassroots to defend the founding principles of the United States.
Anne Schlafly is the author of the new book, Throwing Children Under the Cannabis, published by Eagle Forum and available here.
