President Trump delivered an outstanding State of the Union address earlier this week. The theme was “Choose Greatness” in which he showcased our nation’s accomplishments and the stories of Americans who embody American freedom. Although much of what the President said was met with silence and glares from Democrats, he conveyed a message of unity among Congress.
One of the President’s first quotes of the night was, “Victory is not winning for our party. Victory is winning for the country.” He immediately set the tone for both Republicans and Democrats to work together for the good of the people. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) have set their sights on delegitimizing President Trump’s position rather than debating and crafting legislation that would be good for the people of America. This was a great reminder for our elected officials.
Democrat women arrived dressed in all white, many adding “ERA Yes” buttons to their outfits, to commemorate the women’s suffrage movement. Ironically, many of the early suffragettes were pro-life who did not hesitate to call abortion “evil” and “revolting”. Yet, Democrat women shook their heads in disgust when the President criticized lawmakers who have advocated for late-term abortions and infanticide. He then called on Congress to pass legislation that would prevent abortions after a baby can feel pain in the womb. Thankfully, we have a President who boldly values the unborn.
The immigration fight was a topic that everyone was looking forward to hearing about. The President reiterated his stance on a strong border wall. He said, “This is a moral issue. The lawless state of our southern border is a threat to the safety, security, and financial well-being of all Americans. We have a moral duty to create an immigration system that protects the lives and jobs of our citizens.” A poll conducted by CBS News that night showed a whopping 72% of viewers agreed with the President’s views on immigration. Based on these numbers, the American people truly understand that a border wall is better for all people.
Other policy initiatives, such as better infrastructure, lowering prescription drug prices, school choice, and paid family leave was mentioned. These types of legislation can be potentially disastrous, especially with a Democrat majority in the House. However, we must be vigilant in watching for these bills and educating our Representatives on these issues.
