As the first session of the 118th Congress began, Republicans controlled the House of Representatives by a narrow majority – 221 GOP to 213 Democrats. The Senate majority was narrowly held by the Democrats with 52 Democrats (and Independents who caucus with the Democrats) to 48 Republicans. With narrow majorities in both chambers, Members had to be both unified and creative to accomplish their goals. This proved very challenging, but Republicans were able to earn some wins for the American people along the way. In many instances, just a few conservatives were able to make a big difference.
