It often takes someone with experience outside the arena to accurately diagnose what is going on inside. Ileana Johnson Paugh escaped Communist Romania in the 1970s to come to the United States — a country that was free and civil, and where opportunities were limitless for those who sought them. Now, forty years later, she notes the unsettling similarities between the violence in our cities and the Nazis’ infamous Kristallnacht or “Night of Broken Glass”.
