Capitol Hill Report: 20 Week Abortion Ban Fails; State of the Union

20 Week Abortion Ban Fails

During a procedural measure this week, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (S. 2311) failed to go to a final vote.  The 51-49 vote fell short of the 60 votes needed to continue.  Two Republicans, Senators Susan Collins (ME) and Lisa Murkowski (AK) voted against the bill while three Democrats, Senators Joe Donnelly (IN), Joe Manchin (WV), and Bob Casey (PA) voted in favor of the bill.  This circumstance shows how radical the Democrat party has become on abortion.

Medical evidence has shown that babies in the womb are able to feel pain at 20 weeks, or 5-month, gestation.  At this point, the baby has a fully formed nervous system, as well as limbs and other body parts.  Recent technology has been able to film a baby at this stage inside the womb, countering the extreme narrative that it is just a “clump of cells.”  A recent Marist poll found that two-thirds of Americans support this legislation, with half of pro-choice individuals in favor.  Democrats have chosen to ignore modern science and their constituency in order to continue the killing of future generations.

Eagle Forum applauds your efforts in supporting this bill. We will continue to change hearts and minds on this issue, as well as support future pro-life initiatives.

State of the Union

President Donald Trump delivered his first State of the Union address this week, which was laden with achievement and hope. He addressed issues like the economy, infrastructure, national security, and immigration. He also touted his accomplishments on judicial nominees, tax reform, and job creation. If you missed his speech, you can read a copy of it here. Many of his accomplishments could not have been contained in an hour and a half speech. We would like to highlight a few wins he may have missed.

Known as the most “pro-life President ever,” President Trump has been publicly outspoken on his abortion stance.  He has made great strides on conscience protections, banning funds for overseas abortion efforts, and became the first President, since Ronald Reagan to address the March for Life.  As he continues to recognize the unborn, more initiatives are able to develop to protect life.

Last July, President Trump announced a ban on the recruitment of transgender military personnel.  Sex reassignment surgeries and hormone treatments for service members and their families negatively impact the nation’s military readiness and morale and divert funds that are badly needed for upgraded equipment. Our military should be ready to protect American lives at any moment. Although judges have blocked the ban, Eagle Forum continues to call upon the Justice Department to appeal again and upon citizens to support President Trump’s wise position.

Along with the Secretary of the Department of the Interior, Ryan Zinke, the President has scaled back the number of federal lands that were taken by the Obama Administration.  This act has allowed state and local economies to flourish.  It also grants local citizens more of a say over the handling of these areas.

President Trump has listened to the true needs of Americans and their families.  Eagle Forum will continue to work with the Trump Administration to enact policies that keep American families safe and thriving.
