Senate Vote on Planned Parenthood – please call!
Your calls to Congress worked! Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced yesterday that the Senate will have a cloture vote Thursday on a Continuing Resolution (CR) that funds the government through December 11th and includes H.R. 3134, passed by the House of Representatives last Friday, stopping Planned Parenthood funding for one year and redirecting funds to Federally Qualified Health Centers. These health centers not only provide more comprehensive health services, but they also outnumber Planned Parenthood clinics across the nation 20 to 1. By redirecting federal funding away from Planned Parenthood, America’s largest abortion provider, Congress is continuing to fund women’s health care through centers that give more options and more services to women.
Unfortunately, the CR is unlikely to pass the Senate because of the 60-vote threshold to end debate. Democrats have been “filibustering” bills they don’t like by refusing to vote for cloture. The Republican Majority knows it, and Leader McConnell has already signaled that he then will bring up a “clean” CR that will fund every one of the President’s priorities – from Planned Parenthood to his illegal amnesty to the Iran deal to the EPA – and it will pass with the support of Democrats and many Republicans who are terrified of a government shutdown.
Then the clean CR will go over to the House, where 32 House Republicans have signed a letter saying they will not vote for any bill that funds Planned Parenthood. At that point, if Speaker Boehner chooses to take up the Senate’s CR that funds Planned Parenthood, he will have to do exactly what he did last December in order to pass the CRomnibus that funded Obama’s amnesty. He will negotiate with Nancy Pelosi to produce enough Democrats to compensate for the number of Republicans he will lose.
The only thing that will affect change in Congress right now is if you pick up the phone and call your Representative and Senators: demand that Planned Parenthood funding be STOPPED in the Continuing Resolution to fund the government. Consider using this message:
Planned Parenthood, America’s largest abortion provider, is under federal investigation and enjoys $1 billion in net assets. It does not need or deserve taxpayer funding. Congress should block federal funding for Planned Parenthood and redirect the funds to Federally Qualified Health Centers.
Federally Qualified Health Centers provide more comprehensive health services and outnumber Planned Parenthood clinics 20 to 1. Congress should redirect funds to these health centers in order to give more women access to more services across the nation.
