CALL: NO to Obama-Boehner Budget Deal!

CALL: NO to Obama-Boehner Budget Deal!

October 27, 2015

For weeks, Speaker John Boehner and other congressional leaders have been negotiating a two-year budget deal and debt-limit increase with President Obama. This monstrosity not only allows the federal government to take on new debt, but it also gives away the only clear conservative victory from the last six years – the budget caps that have curbed federal discretionary spending.

The Republican negotiators gave Obama, Reid, and Pelosi what they most desperately want right now – spending increases in exchange for promises of cuts to be exacted at some point in the future. It’s no compromise; liberals gained everything they want, including continued funding for executive amnesty, the Iran nuclear deal, and Planned Parenthood. Furthermore, it sets government funding on autopilot through the next presidential election. Congress now has no leverage to force President Obama’s hand on anything he doesn’t want to do.

The situation is made worse by the fact that congressional leadership intends to ram it through both chambers over the next few days. The House will likely vote on it Wednesday, one day before John Boehner gives up his gavel. When he took over as Speaker, Boehner promised 72 hours to review any bill before it comes to the floor, but on what could be the last bill he moves, Boehner won’t give Members that much time. Why should a lame-duck speaker be allowed to cobble together a massive budget deal behind closed doors and then force its passage?

Prior to the vote on the budget deal, the Republican conference will be voting by secret ballot on who they want to be the next Speaker of the House. While condemning the process, Paul Ryan has not taken a position on this massive spending bill (that his staff reportedly helped write). This budget deal will show what kind of leadership Paul Ryan will offer in the waning days of the Obama administration. As Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) indicated, if Ryan doesn’t help stop this terrible deal, conservative Members of Congress should block him from becoming Speaker of the House.

Call your representative today. Tell them not to surrender on spending and to vote NO on anything that advances the Obama-Boehner budget deal, including the rule.
