Congress’s August Recess: Take Action!

August 6, 2015

Congress’s annual August recess officially began this week as senators left Washington. Representatives and senators will spend much of the next few weeks in their districts and states meeting with constituents. Of course, our country continues to face many grave problems. Members of Congress need to hear from you so they can return to the Capitol in September ready to work. You can find out if they are holding any townhalls near you here or here.

Planned Parenthood: Another video was released this week that showed Planned Parenthood employees working to profit from the abortions they perform. This billion-dollar a year organization shouldn’t get another dime from taxpayers to fund these horrors. Urge your representative to demand a vote on defunding Planned Parenthood when the House of Representatives meets again in September, and call on senators and representatives to cut off funding in the appropriations process.

Immigration: Shocking crimes committed by illegal aliens have brought renewed attention to “sanctuary cities,” jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration officials. However, the Obama administration is also complicit by refusing to deport thousands of criminal aliens who don’t meet “current enforcement priorities,” thereby making the U.S. a sanctuary nation. While there are several bills to crack down on sanctuary cities, it’s time for Congress to ensure that our immigration laws are enforced everywhere in the United States. The Davis-Oliver Act, H.R. 1148 in the House sponsored by Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) and S. 1640 in the Senate by Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), would not only deal with sanctuary cities but would also encourage federal-state cooperation in immigration enforcement and expedite the removal of criminal aliens. Please urge your representative and senators to support the Davis-Oliver Act.

Iran Deal: President Obama’s deal with Iran lifts sanctions on the world’s largest sponsor of terrorism but barely slows its path to a nuclear bomb. In addition, the administration refuses to let Congress read several side deals made between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency. The president also chose to take his deal to the UN before Congress could respond. Tell Members of Congress to reject this terrible deal.

Resolution by Rep. Meadows: Conservatives in the House have faced retribution for voting their conscience and constituency over the past few months. Before the House of Representatives left for the August recess, Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) offered a “motion to vacate the chair,” which would oust Speaker John Boehner (R-OH). He was joined in the effort by Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY), Walter Jones (R-NC), and Ted Yoho (R-FL). Members of Congress will likely face this issue upon return. Let your representative know what you think about the leadership of the Republican Party in Congress.
