WYOMING: Common Core Calls Needed Today!
HB97 Passes Introduction! Contact Ed Committee!
February 17, 2014
Great news! Thanks to the hard work of so many activists, especially our friends at Wyoming Citizens Opposing Common Core, House Bill 97 has been assigned to the House Education committee and will be heard on Monday afternoon. Click here to see the process that the bill must go through in order to become law.
We must be involved in each step of the process to ensure the bill survives. Please take action below and contact the members of the House Education Committee to make sure they understand our concerns with Common Core.
We are seeing a groundswell of opposition to Common Core initiative nationwide, and it is vital that our elected officials represent our concerns well and protect our schools from this top-down, federally controlled approach to education.
In addition to the federal overreach, the Standards are of poor quality and will leave our students behind their international peers. For example:
- The Standards fail to prepare students for studies in science, technology, engineering and math. They put our students two years behind their peers in high-performing countries by eighth grade, and they are even worse for high school.
- In English language arts, the Common Core severely de-emphasizes the study of classic literature in favor of drab and simplistic “informational” texts. It does this despite the fact that the overwhelming evidence is that children should be reading more, not less, classic literature.
- Prominent child psychiatrists and psychologists have heavily criticized the standards as being age-inappropriate for young children.
Wyoming must reclaim its control of education and restore sovereignty to our state, and your voice is critical in ensuring our elected officials push back against Common Core and pass HB 97 through the House Education Committee!

Please vote YES on HB 97!
We are writing to urge you to please take action on Common Core this session, and vote YES on HB 97.
The Common Core is a big-government, top-down approach to education, and it is not good for students or the future of Wyoming.
The Common Core Standards are of poor quality and will fail to prepare our students for studies in science, technology, engineering, and math. By eighth grade, the standards put our students two years behind their peers in high-performing countries and even further behind in high school.
In English language arts, the Common Core severely de-emphasizes the study of classic literature and instead implements drab and simplistic “informational” texts. We know that critical thinking is the key to success, and the evidence shows that children should be reading more, not less, classic literature.
Child psychiatrists and psychologists have heavily criticized the Standards as being age-inappropriate for young children.
Wyoming jumped into Common Core without evaluating the costs, but now we know from multiple sources the high costs of this initiative — Wyoming taxpayers cannot afford the Common Core!
We know that Wyoming cannot depend on the federal government to look out for the best interests of our children, so please defend Wyoming and restore our authority in education by removing us from the Common Core State Standards Initiative this legislative session!
