Eagle Forum to Town Hall Attendees:
"Be More Vocal about Taxpayer-Funded Health Care Coverage for Illegal Immigrants."
Washington, D.C.-Eagle Forum, a conservative public policy organization founded by Phyllis Schlafly, encourages town hall meeting attendees to be more vocal about the deliberately-placed loopholes in both the House and Senate health care bills which will allow illegal immigrants to apply for and receive health insurance coverage. A number of Senators and congressmen, such as Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA), Sen. Ben Cardin (D-PA), and Rep. Nick Rahall (D-WV), have erroneously responded to constituents' questions regarding health coverage for illegal aliens during various town hall meetings over the past few weeks.
Last week when being pressed about the issue, Sen. Specter told a room full of Pennsylvanians, "I won't support a bill that extends coverage to illegal immigrants," and Sen. Cardin similarly declared, "Illegal aliens will not be in this bill, period, the end." Just two days ago, Rep. Nick Rahall (D-WV) was inundated with questions about illegal immigrant coverage at his town hall meeting, yet he assured his constituents that none of the health care bills currently before Congress provide government-backed care for illegal aliens.
"The problem is not that illegal immigrants are explicitly covered under the public option," said Eagle Forum President Phyllis Schlafly. "The problem is the gaping loopholes written into the text of the bill. There is simply nothing at this point that will prevent illegal immigrants from applying for and receiving insurance coverage at the American taxpayers' expense."
The Center for Immigration Studies, which held a panel discussion on this issue today at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., has found that approximately 15-22 percent of the 46 million residents in the U.S. without health coverage are illegal aliens. The Senate bill expands Medicaid and loosens tax credit eligibility requirements, which will be a magnet for illegal enrollment and fraud. Illegal aliens are also exempted from the mandate to buy health insurance, which means that lawful Americans will have to pay a fine for not purchasing insurance, but illegals will be off the hook.
"Under Obama's health care plan, illegal immigrants will have no reason to buy their own coverage or stop receiving taxpayer-funded health services at clinics and emergency rooms," said Schlafly.
The House bill contains no eligibility verification requirements and leaves open the possibility that if one U.S. citizen family member is eligible, then the entire family, including illegal immigrants, is eligible for coverage.
"In fact, the House Republicans offered an amendment in committee to prevent taxpayer-funded health benefits from going to illegal immigrants, but it was defeated by a party-line vote, so that really reveals the true intentions of Obama and his liberal allies," concluded Schlafly.
Eagle Forum continues to encourage American citizens to attend their district and state town hall meetings and to urge their elected officials to oppose any attempts at a stealth health care amnesty for illegal immigrants.
