The Elections of 2000: |
Challenge to America's Christian Heritage
The elections of 2000 are perhaps the most critical elections in America's history. Voters will determine whether our nation continues its flight from its Christian heritage or reverses its perilous course. Across the country, Christians are mobilizing to pray for this watershed event. The National Day of Prayer Task Force is calling God's people to join in a special day of prayer, of exhortation to vote, and of fasting on Sunday, Nov. 5. Eagle Forum's Court Watch strongly supports the Task Force's call and urges you to obtain more information by visiting their web site, http://www.fotf.org/spotlight/spotfeatures/a0013305.cfm. In support of this vital effort, we also share with you the following quotations which we hope will help all of us focus our thoughts as we collectively pray for God's special mercy and providential control on Nov. 7.
2 Chronicles 7:14: If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."
William Penn: "Men must choose to be governed by God, or condemn themselves to be ruled by tyrants."
George Washington: "[I]t is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His Will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor . . . ."
". . . is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible."
John Adams: "Statesmen, my dear Sir, may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is Religion and Morality alone, which can establish the Principles upon which Freedom can securely stand."
"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for the governance of any other."
Thomas Jefferson: "God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are a Gift from God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that His justice cannot sleep forever."
Benjamin Franklin: "Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters."
John Quincy Adams: "The highest glory of the American revolution was this: it connected in one indissoluble bond the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity."
Alexis DeTocqueville: "America is still the place where the Christian religion has kept the greatest real power over men's souls; and nothing better demonstrates how useful and natural it is to man, since the country where it now has the widest sway is both the most enlightened and the freest. If America ceases to be good, she will cease to be great."
Abraham Lincoln: "We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven. . . . . But we have forgotten God. . . .we have become too self-sufficient, . . . too proud to pray to the God that made us! . . . . It behooves us then to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins and to pray for clemency and forgiveness."
General Douglas MacArthur: "History fails to record a single precedent in which nations subject to moral decay have not passed into political and economic decline. There has been either a spiritual awakening to overcome the moral lapse, or a progressive deterioration leading to ultimate national disaster."
Albert Camus: "The world expects of Christians that they will raise their voices so loudly and clearly and so formulate their protest that not even the simplest man can have the slightest doubt about what they are saying. Further, the world expects of Christians that they will eschew all fuzzy abstractions and plant themselves squarely in front of the bloody face of history. We stand in need of folk who have determined to speak directly and unmistakably and come what may, to stand by what they have said."
