Group plans Saturday rally to oppose Trans-Texas Corridor, 4-03-08

Opponents of the proposed Trans-Texas Corridor plan to stage a big march and rally Saturday, April 5, at the Capitol in Austin.

Gov. Rick Perry’s corridor plan calls for 4,000 miles of privately financed and operated toll roads throughout the state.

Rally organizer Terri Hall, executive director of Texans Uniting for Reform and Freedom - or TURF - said if the toll roads are built, truckers will pay a high price.

"They’ll be facing 50 cents a mile minimum truck start toll rates, added onto our already high cost of fuel," Hall told "Land Line Now" on XM Satellite Radio.

"This will be an absolute disaster for the trucking industry that already operates at a very thin margin of profit, if not now running at a loss with the gas prices we’re seeing."

Feds outsource Mexican truck safety

Trilateral trade association becomes chief inspector

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has delegated key inspection requirements for Mexican trucks to a non-governmental trilateral trade association, whose goal is to impose North American standards on all commercial motor vehicles operating in Mexico, Canada, and the United States.

Since the early 1980s, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, or CVSA, operating as a non-governmental organization, has quietly knit together the motor-vehicle agencies in the three countries, building a common regulatory continental structure below the radar of public opinion, available now to function as the backbone of the FMCSA effort to allow approved Mexican trucking companies to run their long-haul rigs throughout the United States. Trucking another job we don't want?

Mexican trucks with Mexican truck drivers are now permitted to enter the U.S. and drive to any destination. These trucks are loaded at Mexican ports.

Mexican drivers are paid half or less than American drivers. Soon all deliveries in America will be cheaper by using Mexican drivers. American drivers will lose their jobs, homes and cars, not pay property taxes and then the government will say, "See? These are jobs Americans don't want." DailyHerald.com, 9-13-07

The Nation cover story denies Superhighway

Nevertheless acknowledges massive Texas project to accommodate NAFTA, WTO

In a cover story for the current Nation magazine, Christopher Hayes is the latest to join a growing list of those who deny a NAFTA Superhighway exists.

"There is no such thing as a proposed NAFTA Superhighway," Hayes declares.

The remainder of the article, however, shows how the Trans Texas Corridor under construction parallel to Interstate 35 is specifically designed to accommodate the steadily growing volume of NAFTA and World Trade Organization traffic pouring into Texas from China and the Far East through Mexican ports on the Pacific such as Manzanillo and Lázaro Cárdenas. Question: What is the NAFTA superhighway, and how would it work?

NAFTA superhighway is a buzz phrase for major transportation corridors that carry international trade through the three biggest countries of North America: Mexico, the United States and Canada.

These highways existed long before implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement began on Jan. 1, 1994.

With total domestic freight tonnage projected to increase 67 percent by 2020, the race is on to secure funding to maintain and improve the U.S. domestic transportation infrastructure and to build new roads to alleviate critical congestion on the nation's roads. AZStar.net, 8.09.2007
