Obama's insistence on sex-ed leaves America's youth unprotected

The latest hot quote from U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) leads me to wonder exactly what values and morals he's instilling in his daughters and what values and morals he will advocate if he becomes the next president.

When a western Pennsylvania woman encouraged the senator to stop abortion, Obama said that "good people can differ" on the abortion issue. Then Obama, an abortion rights supporter, made it clear he also thought children should have access to federally funded, sexually explicit materials provided through so-called comprehensive sex education.

How Much Is That Degree Really Worth?

Do you know any young people with college degrees working in restaurants, retail stores, or somewhere else for which their degree is worthless? Do they owe tens of thousands of dollars in student loans? There are lots of them out there. Perhaps they are reevaluating the worth of a college education. I’m not talking about people who want to be engineers, nurses, biologists, or something else in the hard sciences. I’m talking about some of the so-called “soft sciences” like Women’s Studies or Art History, or some other useless course of study. Only people with huge trust funds should pursue these majors. Mexican curriculum in Oregon schools stirs debate

Some Oregon high schools are adopting Mexico's public school curriculum to help educate Spanish-speaking students with textbooks, an online Web site, DVDs and CDs provided free by Mexico to teach math, science and even U.S. history.

The Oregon Department of Education and Mexico's Secretariat of Public Education are discussing aligning their curricula so courses will be valid in both countries. Associated Press, September 20, 2007

Missouri State University's Social Work Program Fails External Review

MSU student Emily Brooker filed a suit against the school for violating her First Amendment rights after she objected to signing her name to a letter to the state legislature supporting homosexual adoption. MSU agree to settle with Brooker and to both clear her academic record and reimbursement for her attorney fees. After the settlement, MSU’s social science department was reviewed by deans from two other universities. MSU’s President Mike Nietzel said that the review was “as negative a review of an academic program as I have ever seen.” Belleville.com, 4-6-07.

What Colleges Teach -- and Don't Teach

Education Secretary Margaret Spellings says that the Federal Government needs some accountability for the billions of dollars the taxpayers pour into university education. That's right, we do; but her plan, to set up a national database to track students plus a system of testing like No Child Left Behind, is not the solution. April Phyllis Schlafly Report

New Utah Law to Regulate Noncurricular Clubs

The new law gives public school authorities and parents more control overthe noncurricular clubs and their children’s participation in these clubs.
The law requires children to get their parents’ consent before joining a
school club and parents have the ability to review the material presented at
club meetings. The law also gives administrators the authority to refuse to
allow clubs like the Gay Straight Alliance on grounds that homosexual
student clubs violate “the boundaries of socially appropriate behavior.”

Triumph for Parents' Rights in Utah

Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, Jr. signed into law a bill that prohibits school authorities from recommending psychotropic drugs, like Ritalin, to students. The law also protects parents from attempts to remove their children from their custody if they refuse to give their children psychotropic drugs. This is the first law of its kind in the U.S. and a great step forward for parents’ rights. Sltrib.com, 3-10-07.

TeenScreen program officially dead in Fresno, CA.

Sharon Kientz, a California Eagle and former school board member in Auberry, California, has been acknowledged as having led the battle to keep TeenScreen, a mental health screening program, out of the Fresno School District. One board member received so many emails opposing TeenScreen that he said "please tell your organization that we have no interest in or intention to adopt TeenScreen."

Sharon was also honored several years ago by the National Right to Read Organization as its "Teacher of the Year," because she continued teaching phonics during her 20 years teaching kindergarten, even after California adopted the "whole language method."
