Support Builds for Pro-Enforcement Immigration Bill, 12-06-07
Even though the House and Senate have yet to finish 11 of the 12 spending bills this year, there is at least one Member of Congress who has not been dilly-dallying around. Representative Heath Shuler (D-NC) has been hard at work crafting legislation to properly and seriously confront the illegal immigration issue. Eagle Forum is proud to support and endorse Mr. Shuler's bill, which is gaining many co-sponsors especially after the Senate's disastrous attempt to "reform" immigration over the summer through amnesty.

ALERT: Will the U.S. Sew a Fifty-first Star onto the Flag?, 10-19-07
If Puerto Rico were added as a U.S. state:
- The U.S. would transform, overnight, into a bilingual nation. Puerto Ricans do not speak English, the language of our U.S. Constitution and founding documents. The Washington Times article, "Puerto Rican statehood," analyzes all the implications of adding a foreign language-speaking state to the Union.
- It would bring immediate demands for massive federal spending. The average income of Puerto Ricans is less than half that of our poorest state, and infrastructure and the environment are far below American standards.
- Puerto Rico is already a democracy. Despite the deceptive title of the bill, Puerto Rico already has an elected government and exists as a self-governed commonwealth of the U.S.
- Statehood would give Puerto Rico more congressional representation than 25 of our 50 states! It would inevitably give Democrats two additional U.S. Senators and 6 to 8 additional Members of the House.

SENATE TO HOLD ONE MORE HEARING ON L.O.S.T.
This week, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will be holding its second hearing on the UN Law of the Sea Treaty.
The Law of the Sea Treaty, or LOST, created the International Seabed Authority (ISA), giving it total jurisdiction over all the oceans and everything in them, including the ocean floor with "all" its riches ("solid, liquid or gaseous mineral resources"), along with the power to regulate seven-tenths of the world's surface. The treaty remains highly defective, despite claims by both the Clinton and Bush Administrations that all Reagan's concerns have been "fixed." If the Senate were to ratify it, LOST would do the following:

THE GAME IS NOT OVER!
On Tuesday afternoon, the Senate voted to revive the Kyl-Kennedy amnesty bill (S. 1639) and bring it back to the floor by a vote of 64-35 (Roll Call 228). Twenty-one Senators switched their votes from the previous cloture vote, held on June 7, which failed 45-50 (Roll Call 206). The "Traitorous 21" can no longer claim they oppose amnesty. Today they voted to bring it back from the dead. The only recourse they have is to vote against the second cloture motion (to end debate), which will take place Thursday.

ALERT: LEAVE THE AMNESTY IN THE GRAVE!
Reasons to Oppose Resurrecting the Amnesty Bill
- This bill has already failed 3 cloture votes (Roll Call votes 203, 204, 206)
- No Senator, to our knowledge, has reported receiving more calls or constituent contacts supporting the bill than those opposing it.
- This bill has circumvented the legislative process by being negotiated behind closed doors, stifling debate, and setting up a rigged amendment process with a predetermined outcome.
- No one—conservative or liberal—wants this bill. Conservatives oppose it across the board and now the AFL-CIO is against the bill, along with several Hispanic interest groups—Hispanic Federation and League of United Latin American Citizens (Washington Times, 6/21/07).
Call your Senators and tell them to vote NO on cloture and leave the amnesty bill in its grave! Tell them Eagle Forum will be scoring this vote! A vote in favor of cloture will be scored as a vote for amnesty!

AMNESTY BILL RISES FROM THE DEAD!
Just a few days after President Bush met with Republican Senators in a closed door meeting on Capitol Hill, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell announced a deal to bring the Kyl-Kennedy amnesty bill back from the dead.
The Senate will vote this week on several procedural motions, including the “motion to proceed,” which determines if the Senate will bring back the amnesty bill for a vote. All Senators should vote NO on any attempt to resurrect the amnesty bill. Any vote to bring the bill back will be considered as a vote for amnesty!
As a part of the deal to bring the bill back up, Senate leaders agreed to a set of amendments to be considered. If the amendment does cut to the heart of the bill and attempt to improve it, they will defeat it. As Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) said, “the process is rigged.”
Targets: Burr, Brownback, Bennett, Chambliss, Craig, Cochran, Coleman, Cornyn, Collins, Crapo, Domenici, Ensign, Gregg, Hatch, Hutchison, Isakson, Lott, McConnell, Murkowski, Rockefeller, Sanders, Stabenow, Snowe, Sununu, Stevens, Thune, Warner, Webb

AMNESTY BILL IS COMING BACK!
Senators Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson, both Georgia Republicans, have asked President Bush to send a request to Congress for an emergency spending bill to fund enforcement mechanisms. Simply appropriating money is not enough.
We need enforcement of our current immigration laws for a prolonged period of time before we accept any next steps in the process.
Appropriating funding does not equal the will to fine employers, stop illegal aliens at the border, and immediately locate and deport all alien absconders. The remainder of President Bush’s term should be focused on ending the “unacceptable status quo” by enforcing our current laws.
President Bush, the open borders lobby, and political elites want you to get tired and quit! They want to be able to say that “calls have died down” or “opposition is quieting.” Don’t let that be true!

BIG VICTORY FOR GRASSROOTS!
Washington, D.C.—Eagle Forum, a leading pro-family organization founded by Phyllis Schlafly, praises the tireless efforts of the American people in voicing their opposition to and successfully defeating S. 1348, the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007, better known as the Kyl-Kennedy amnesty bill. On June 7, after two weeks of debate, the Senate defeated cloture on the “grand bargain,” which was crafted behind closed doors by a handful of Senators and skipped the committee process.
“It became obvious that the longer the Senate debated the so-called comprehensive immigration bill, the more the grassroots opposition increased,” said Eagle Forum president Phyllis Schlafly.
“The United States Senate finally listened to the overwhelming opposition to this amnesty bill,” said Eagle Forum Executive Director Jessica Echard. “With calls running hundreds to one opposed, there was no question that we don’t want new laws. We simply want our immigration laws, which already exist, enforced.”
Eagle Forum organized a coalition of outside groups to oppose the bill, similar to the coalition used to successfully defeat the Harriet Miers nomination in 2005.
“This vote sends the message that the American people can still call the shots on how they are governed. The power of the White House, Big Business, cultural and religious elites was not enough to drown out the overwhelming public opposition to this bill. What a great day for grassroots America!” Echard stated.

More Senate Details on Senate Amnesty

SENATE ON IMMIGRATION: ROUND 2!
It's May in Washington; that means time for immigration "reform." Last May, the Senate passed a horrible comprehensive (a.k.a amnesty) bill, which would have legalized almost all the 12 million illegal aliens now in our country. It would have also set up a guest-worker program, importing up to 200,000 foreign workers every year. The majority of Senate Republicans opposed the Kennedy-McCain-Hagel-Martinez bill (S. 2611), but the Senate passed it by 62-36 (Roll Call 157). Thanks to sensible House members, the bill died.
