Food safety inspectors struggle with swelling volume of imports, 6-30-08

LAREDO – Day after day, Mexican trucks line up as far as the eye can see for entry to the U.S. at the World Trade Bridge, carrying everything from raw tomatoes, broccoli and fresh basil to frozen seafood. They also bring in salmonella, listeria, restricted pesticides and other food poisons.

High Court Takes Hiatus From Judicial Supremacy to Strike Down D.C. Gun Ban, 6-26-08

WASHINGTON, June 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Eagle Forum, a leading pro-family organization founded by Phyllis Schlafly, author of The Supremacists: The Tyranny of Judges and How to Stop It, praises the U.S. Supreme Court's 5-4 ruling today which overturned the D.C gun ban. The case, District of Columbia v. Heller, was argued before the U.S. Supreme Court on March 18, 2008 after the District of Columbia appealed the ruling of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, which affirmed that the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects an individual right to keep and bear arms. The District's 32-year-old ban on handguns and its requirement that guns kept in the home be unloaded or inoperable at all times, even in cases of self-defense, violates that constitutional right. This case marks the first time since 1939 that a Second Amendment case has reached the Supreme Court.

LOST at Sea, 6-20-08

Like a monster in a horror flick franchise, the Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST), an omnibus treaty originally blocked by President Ronald Reagan, is back! And despite what the doomsday document's delirious spokesmen say, it's about as scary as ever.

The convention is being pushed by a mix of activists, who support international law -- any international law -- and businesses, such as the International Association of Drilling Contractors, that see visions of profits dancing in their boardrooms. Treaty critics are being dismissed as ignorant fools or cynical liars.

Judicial Supremacy Strikes in Oklahoma, 6-11-08

The elected representatives in Oklahoma passed a law to stem the tide of illegal immigrants and, faster than you can say “judicial supremacy,” a federal judge blocked its enforcement. The court suspended key sections of the law even before it was due to take effect on July 1.

The danger of seeing women as victims, 5-29-08

The recent overblown controversy that erupted when Washington University bestowed a well-deserved honorary degree on Phyllis Schlafly made me think about the different styles and substance that different women bring to the political table and public life.
