Debate Could Turn on a 7-Letter Word

Calling Proposal an 'Amnesty' Rouses Foes, Confounds Backers

"Anything that allows illegal immigrants to stay and become legal is amnesty," said Jessica Echard, executive director of the Eagle Forum, a national conservative group. "We're not saying they should deport everyone. We are saying let's turn off the spigot, start enforcing laws on the border and in the workplace. Then we will see the illegal population shrink on its own." WashingtonPost.com, May 30, 2007

Why feminists don't speak for me

By Ashley Herzog
Tuesday, May 29, 2007

During my three years as a columnist for my college newspaper, I’ve resisted frequent requests that I explain my opposition to feminism. Apparently, a lot of people are shocked to discover a female college student who does not spend her days singing the praises of the National Organization for Women. Feminists fight for my rights, my readers tell me – so why am I constantly criticizing them?

No Alien Left Behind

There’s nothing as permanent as temporary immigration status.

Our editors here at National Review Online pointed out last week that “It’s Worse Than You Think” with regard to the Senate’s preposterous amnesty bill. They were addressing specifically the fact that the Senate bill would immediately give probationary amnesty to virtually all illegal aliens, and that the much-touted enforcement “triggers” are therefore a sham, since legalization will already have taken place. What’s more, if the benchmarks (more miles of fencing, additional border-patrol agents, etc.) are not met, the probationary status would likely continue indefinitely, since there is no expiration date in the bill. Importing a slave class to do the dirty work

APPARENTLY, my position on immigration is that we must deport all 12 million illegal aliens immediately, inasmuch as this is billed as the only alternative to immediate amnesty. The jejune fact that we "can't deport them all" is supposed to lead ineluctably to the conclusion that we must grant amnesty to illegal aliens - and fast! by Ann Coulter, WhittierDailyNews.com

Senate bill waives 'alien absconders'

Illegal aliens who have been caught and ordered deported, but who are currently defying that order, could be allowed to stay and even get on a path to citizenship under the Senate immigration bill. THE WASHINGTON TIMES, May 24, 2007

The floodgates are open

The U.S. Senate has spoken – choosing lawlessness, fostering cultural anarchy and disregarding the loud and clear voice of the people on matters of border control and immigration policy.

The politicians who created the illegal immigration problem have determined the only course to correction is to repeat the mistakes of the past. WND.com, May 24, 2007

United Nations' control of the Sea Scuttle the Law of the Sea Treaty!

The Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST) is another grand scheme of the United Nations. LOST would give control of roughly 70% of the Earth's surface to the U.N., establishing rules which would govern the use of the world's oceans. LOST is back, and on a fast track for ratification because the Bush Administration is now calling for accession to this convention. We have stopped LOST several times in the past, and we should be able to stop it again, with enough outcry. By Tom DeWeese, American Policy Center, May 24, 2007

A Little Truth in a Little Mistake

At a recent conference, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency was listed in the “travel security and immigration” category instead of the “law enforcement section.” ICE is often criticized for its ineffectiveness, and a report from the inspector general’s office at Homeland Security suggests that ICE has “significant problems” apprehending and detaining illegal aliens. Eagle Forum Poll: Public Wants Illegals to Go Home

WASHINGTON, May 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- New polling shows a strong preference for enforcing U.S. Immigration laws that cause illegal aliens to go home. Advocacy groups and even some media outlets have released surveys showing support for legalizing illegals. However, those polls often gave voters a very limited choice between large-scale deportations or "earned legalization," or simply asked about conditional legalization without any alternative. When given the across-the-board enforcement option, with the goal of causing illegals to go home, the public strongly favors the enforcement approach over legalization
with conditions. pr-inside.com, May 22, 2007

Superhighway: It's not a conspiracy, but it's real

Regarding "Would you believe the United States, Canada and Mexico will merge, with a 'SuperCorridor' through an immigration and trade center in Missouri?" ( May 13): No one who has written about a superhighway from Mexico to Canada has ever charged that it is a conspiracy. By definition, a conspiracy must be secretly hatched. There is nothing secret about the superhighway.

Tax amnesty for illegals

White House insisted provision for payment of owed monies be stripped from Senate bill

Whether the new bipartisan Senate immigration bill amounts to little more than amnesty for the 15 to 20 million illegal aliens residing in the U.S., as critics charge, the measure does offer one kind of amnesty – tax amnesty. WorldNetDaily.com, May 19, 2007

AMNESTY VOTE DELAYED UNTIL MONDAY!

Tell Your Senators to Vote NO on Cloture!

This could be the most important alert you have received from Eagle Forum! The Senate negotiations on an immigration bill continue at this moment. Because a deal could not be reached by Wednesday, the vote on cloture (whether to proceed to the amnesty bill) has been delayed until Monday. This means you have until Monday evening to be as active as you have ever been on any policy issue!

The Courts and the Culture War, III

"Yesterday we suffered from crimes; today we suffer from laws." So wrote Tacitus, the great Roman historian of the First and Second Centuries, A.D. The same lament can be uttered for America today, where we suffer from the edicts of Humanistic judges, whose runaway rulings have eroded our Constitution and our culture. Court Watch, 5-15-07

I finally figured it out. I kept hearing about all those jobs Americans just won’t do. SENATE ON IMMIGRATION: ROUND 2!

Tell your Senators to OPPOSE any guest-worker/amnesty or "comprehensive" immigration bills!

It's May in Washington; that means time for immigration "reform." Last May, the Senate passed a horrible comprehensive (a.k.a amnesty) bill, which would have legalized almost all the 12 million illegal aliens now in our country. It would have also set up a guest-worker program, importing up to 200,000 foreign workers every year. The majority of Senate Republicans opposed the Kennedy-McCain-Hagel-Martinez bill (S. 2611), but the Senate passed it by 62-36 (Roll Call 157). Thanks to sensible House members, the bill died.

A High Cost for Denying the Cross

The removal of the Christian cross from Wren Chapel by the College of William and Mary’s President Gene Nichol has taken a huge toll on the school. Not only did the school lose a $12 million planned donation, but William and Mary’s undergraduate applications have increased only 1% over last year and the endowment growth rate is down from 12% to 2%. “The school sustained serious damage to alumni relations, fundraising and reputation under the current Administration and is in serious danger of falling further in the rankings,” according to William and Mary alumnus Lance Kyle. A local independent newspaper has suggested to the college’s Board of Visitors not to renew President Gene Nichol’s contract. Worldnetdaily.com", 4- 21- 07.

Missouri Senator Claire Mccaskill Disinvited To Speak At A Catholic School Graduation

St. Joseph’s Academy, a Catholic high school in St. Louis, MO, rescinded its invitation to Sen. McCaskill, whose daughter is in the graduating class, to speak at this year’s commencement. The basis for decision: the St. Louis archdiocese forbids giving a public forum to people whose worldviews clash with the principles of the Roman Catholic Church. Sen. McCaskill is an ardent supporter of abortion, embryonic stem cell research, and human cloning. Stltoday.com, 5-2-07.

Why U.S. Jobs Move Overseas

Why do U.S. companies relocate their plants overseas, thereby abolishing U.S. jobs?

(a) they can hire workers at very low wages (such as 30 cents an hour in China)
(b) the companies don't have to pay any employee benefits
(c) they don't have to comply with safety and environmental regulations
(d) they don't have to pay foreign taxes when they export their products back to us
