As Democrat-led Congress passed a bill to fund embryonic stem cell research, another miraculous adult stem cell advancement was announced. Brazilian, not U.S., researchers have treated 15 young diabetics with adult stem cells from the patients’ own bodies. 13 of the 15 Type 1 diabetics have gone without medication and have no signs of diabetes. “It’s the first time in the history of Type 1 diabetes where people have gone with no treatment whatsoever ... no medications at all, with normal blood sugars,” said study co-author Dr. Richard Burt, Northwestern University Medical School. Although the headlines read, “stem cells,” this wonderful medical advancement relies specifically on adult—not embryonic—stem cells.
