Victory in Alaska on Same-sex Benefits Advisory
A statewide advisory, to ban health benefits for the live-in partners of homosexual public employees, passed with 53% of the vote. In some areas, where the advisory was the only ballot issue, it passed 3-1. In 1998, 68% of Alaskans voted for a state amendment to ban same-sex marriage, but in 2005, the state Supreme Court ruled in favor of providing state funded health benefits to the non-employed homosexual partners of state employees.
The advisory vote was a precursor to a statewide vote on a constitutional amendment to ban health benefits for homosexual partners. ktuu.com, 4-4-07.
